We are a small but passionate group of community residents and volunteers. Our common vision is that of celebrating and promoting the artist-residents and history of the Dawson Trail. This grassroots initiative, spearheaded in 2019 by local artist and heritage advocate, Pierrette Sherwood, relies on the support of dedicated volunteers.

As of 2022, the Dawson Trail Art and Heritage Tour is working towards the implementation of its last phase of development to erect a commemorative trail of way finding markers and exhibits throughout the communities that are united by the historic Dawson Trail. This initiative is led by a Steering Committee of local representatives (see list below) and supported by local, provincial and federal government funding.

While the annual Art Tour ran from 2020 to 2023, it was decided that it would be discontinued for 2024. The Commemorative Exhibits celebrate art on the trail and we look forward to initiating more artistic programming in the future.

We are organized as a sub-committee of the Dawson Trail Museum in Richer, MB.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts. Reach us at dawsontrailtourmb@gmail.com

Original Project Vision and Scope

The Dawson Trail Arts and Heritage Tour is a multi-faceted initiative to uncover and revive the rich history of the Dawson Trail in Manitoba.

The project has several phases: 1) Research; 2) Interpretive Trail Plan; 3) Website; 4) Interpretive Trail Design and Development; 5) Interpretive Trail Production and Installation. At the writing of this content (June, 2020), we will have completed the first three phases of this project.

The Dawson Trail Arts and Heritage Tour is a multi-year endeavour that will include:

    • A roadside interpretive exhibit along the Dawson Road from Richer to Lorette, and beyond

    • A website and map to share research findings and serve as a central place for information on the history of the Dawson Trail

    • Points of interest for visitors to explore, including the development of parks, landmarks and/or artistic installations that highlight the history of the Dawson Trail throughout the communities of Lorette, Ste-Geneviève, Sainte-Anne, and Richer

    • An annual art tour featuring local visual artists and heritage programming

Project Objectives

    • To commemorate and celebrate the unique cultural, historical and natural heritage of the Dawson road

    • To contribute in a positive way to the economic development and tourism potential of the region

    • To contribute to the preservation of history that is of national, provincial and regional relevance

    • To grow the project over time so that it may be cherished for years to come as an asset of the community dedicated to the preservation, celebration and development of local arts and heritage for future generations
